Amazon’s founder building a 10000 year clock

Here is something you may have missed…The Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos is building a 10000 year clock inside of a mountain, but why?

The clock is said to be a symbol for long term thinking. Originally the brainchild of MIT professor Danny Hillis – who has been working on the project since 1989. Hillis wanted to create a clock that will tell the time for the next 10000 years, tick once per year and chime every millennium.

Bezos has been helping out since about 2005. But now the clock is nearing completion and is set about 2000 feet high inside a mountain in West Texas.

According to Bezos, the clock itself will be 500 feet tall, “all mechanical, powered by day/night thermal cycles,” and “synchronized at solar noon.”

The Clock’s chime generator creates a different bell ringing sequence each day for 10,000 years. Inside the mountain, there are a series of anniversary chambers to celebrate milestones at 1, 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000 years. The latter three chambers will be left for future generations.

Although the clock is on a property owned by Bezos, it appears the public will be able to visit upon its completion. To read more about the project, head to
