Following on from a recent article about the cost of gym memberships and home gyms, I thought it would be interesting to hear how others have set up a home gym to save money.
I’ll start and share my set up.
I have a large shed that I have converted a portion into a home gym. Have a half cage/rack that you can do pullup’s, squats, bench etc. Also brought an Olympic bar and some plates, a bike and a boxing bag. Here is a breakdown of the cost to the best of my memory.
Rack/Cage – $299 (On special at rebel sports)
Olympic bar – $120
Bumper/weight plates – 167.5 kg @ $3.50 per kg total $586.25 ( don’t need anywhere near this amount of weight, a couple of years ago I imported 1,000 kg and onsold about 900kg worth).
Spin bike – $250 (cheapy of eBay but does the job)
Boxing bag – $130 (another cheapy of eBay)
Flooring – 6 square meters of rubber flooring at $30 per/sqm Total $180
Folding bench – $150
Weighted vest – $100
Total – $1,815.25 (Approximate).
I didn’t buy all this equipment at once and have accumulated it over a couple of years and could have saved money if I brought it used. I can do everything I like with it as I never really used the machines in the gym. The only thing I would like to add is a treadmill as my area don’t have street lights and footpaths so it’s not good to run at night.
I haven’t paid for a gym membership in three years so have saved a few grand on fees and I’m lucky that I prefer working out at home.

That’s a great set up. I’m only just getting started with my home gym but so far have my bike set up so I can ride stationary and a rack for pull-ups etc. Don’t have any gyms near me so it’s much better to exercise at home!!11/10/2020 at 11:29 am #801LumberJackKeymaster

That’s not a bad starting point Sammy, if you more into bodyweight work like lots of riders that’s almost all you need to keep you going!
